Spring Brings New Arrivals to the Baton Rouge Zoo

Spring is in full swing at the Baton Rouge Zoo with the arrival of several newborn animals, including two Nubian ibex twins and an American bison calf.

The ibex kids were born on May 4th and are aptly named Luke & Leia. Nubian ibex are native to the mountainous, extremely dry regions of Northeastern Africa and the Middle East. They are commonly found in rocky desert habitats and if you stop by the Zoo you’re likely to see even the youngest ibex twins climbing the giant mountain structure that is a key feature of the exhibit.

The Zoo also recently celebrated the birth of a healthy American bison calf, the latest addition to the Zoos American bison herd and a sibling to the calf born just last year. They are a species native to North America and while typically born at around 30-70 pounds they grow quickly and at full size are North America’s largest land mammal.

“These births are an exciting reminder of the important role AZA accredited zoos play in species survival, conservation, and education,” says Baton Rouge Zoo Director Jim Fleshman. “We’re thrilled for guests to experience these incredible animals and watch them grow.”

The Baton Rouge Zoo encourages guests to stop by this spring to meet the Zoo’s newest arrivals and learn more about them.
