Available Positions

The Administrative Services Supervisor exercises a leadership role in Zoo Administration by managing the Zoo administration office and providing administrative, technical, and secretarial support for all aspects of Zoo operations. Work involves independent judgment, problem-solving, and interaction with BREC staff and the general public in person, by telephone, and through correspondence. This position prepares the accreditation application for submission to the Association of Zoos & Aquariums and other AZA surveys.   Scope of duties includes but is not limited to scheduling meetings, training & travel for Zoo staff; maintaining the Zoo Director’s calendar and correspondence; preparing for Zoo Advisory Committee meetings; and providing administrative support to the Friends of the Baton Rouge Zoo.  This position completes the Zoo’s Mid-Year and Annual Report to the BREC Commission and includes documentation for the CAPRA accreditation.  This position prepares service agreements with Zoo vendors, obtains purchase orders, and submits invoices for payment.  In addition, this position is part of the Zoo’s event management team.  The Administrative Services Supervisor supervises the Zoo Receptionist, the Zoo Registrar, and the Zoo Budget Analyst.


General Summary: The Animal Technician performs animal husbandry, including feeding animals and cleaning animal facilities.

Requirements and Job Specifications

Education Required: High School Diploma or equivalent

License(s) Required: Valid LA driver's license in good standing. Must be able to obtain an LA driver's license within 60 days of hire.

Years of Relevant Work Experience: 1 year experience in animal care. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.

The Catering/Event Sales Manager seeks and develops relationships with local companies, groups, and organizations to grow the Zoo's catering/event sales business. The Manager will be responsible for maintaining sales and outside calls quota. Sales techniques will include personal appointments, outbound telemarketing, and onsite FAM tours. Managers must spend at least 50% of their time meeting with clients to sell products and grow and maintain relationships. The Catering/Event Sales Manager works closely with Education Department and Guest Services staff to successfully fulfill sales as needed. The Catering/Event Sales Manager works with Zoo management to ensure services rendered, products sold, and price points are attractive and in line with our local market offerings. This position also contributes to positive guest experiences and performs other duties as required.  

The Guest Services Associate is responsible for a variety of guest-related activities.  Duties may include assisting and greeting guests; counting guests; collecting and remitting cash; safe and efficient operation of rides; setting up displays, loading, unloading, and stocking merchandise; selling merchandise in gift shops; food service and catering preparation; displaying and selling food to guests; assisting in setting up and breaking down of zoo events and rentals.  Other duties will include maintaining assigned work stations that are aesthetically pleasing and businesslike, which could consist of a ticket office, gift shop, cafes, and surrounding areas.  There is constant direct exposure to the public. Scheduled work hours and assigned areas may vary to meet the needs of Zoo guests. Must be flexible to work some evenings and early morning hours, weekends, and some holidays are required—limited exposure to some adverse temperature conditions with extended periods of sitting and standing in a small workspace.

The Maintenance Technician I works mainly outdoors at the Zoo and other exhibits, preparing beds, tilling, digging, watering, weeding, trimming, fertilizing, and other general grounds maintenance activities.

The Plumbing Technician works on-site at Baton Rouge Zoo facilities to repair, maintain, alter, and create new plumbing systems, including water lines, drain lines, gas lines, air lines, sprinkler systems, gas heaters, water heaters, drinking fountains. The work is largely independent and subject to periodic inspection and checks.

  • Years Relevant Work Experience: Three (3) years of work-related experience. Equivalent Ten (10) or more years related experience. combination of education and experience will be considered.
