Malayan Tiger "Tanvir" Finds a New Home in Baton Rouge Through the Species Survival Plan

EAST BATON ROUGE PARISH – BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo is honored to welcome Tanvir, a 15-year-old male Malayan tiger, to our conservation team. Known to his keepers as “Tan,” this remarkable tiger joins the Zoo through the collaborative efforts of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) Species Survival Plan® (SSP) Program. Due to our unique off-exhibit facilities, Baton Rouge Zoo can provide Tan with a comfortable, secure environment as he continues his essential role in conserving his critically endangered species.

Though Tanvir will not be on public display, his presence at our Zoo underscores our commitment to conservation efforts that extend beyond the exhibit space. Tan will be housed in our off-exhibit area, which has enabled us to welcome him here and participate in this critical conservation initiative.

The AZA SSP Program is a cooperative effort that oversees endangered species management across accredited facilities, focusing on genetic diversity and population sustainability. The program’s success is achieved through comprehensive Breeding and Transfer Plans, ensuring that each species has a healthy, diverse population base across zoos and aquariums nationwide. With nearly 300 SSP programs managed by expert Taxon Advisory Groups, AZA facilities are dedicated to protecting species like the Malayan tiger through shared resources, planning, and expertise.

“We are thrilled to be part of Tanvir’s journey and grateful to the SSP for facilitating his placement here,” says Jim Fleshman, Zoo Director of BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo. “While he won’t be on public exhibit, his role here supports our mission and the vital work of preserving endangered species through AZA’s collaborative conservation network.”

BREC's Baton Rouge Zoo is proud to contribute to these efforts and welcomes Tanvir as a critical part of our commitment to conservation.
