BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo Aims to Raise 8,000 Pounds of Food During Zoo Lights

EAST BATON ROUGE PARISH– BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo is calling on the community to get into the holiday spirit and give back during Zoo Lights, presented by Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Health.

The annual holiday tradition runs Nov. 28 through Dec. 30 and features a dazzling trail of twinkling lights and glowing displays throughout the zoo. Guests who bring a nonperishable food item will receive half off regular admission, with all donations benefiting the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank.

During this time of the year, the need for food donations is greater than ever. The zoo has set a goal to collect 8,000 pounds of food this year to help support families across the Capital Area.

“We know the holidays can be especially tough for many families, and this year that’s even more true,” said Jim Fleshman, director of BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo. “By donating just one can of food, you’re helping make a meaningful impact right here in our community — and you’ll enjoy a magical night of lights in the process.”

Last year, the zoo collected 7,481 pounds of food, providing 6,234 meals for individuals and families served by the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank. Organizers hope to surpass that total this season as guests enjoy one of Baton Rouge’s most beloved holiday traditions.
