Eastern Box Turtle

Young box turtles are almost completely carnivorous. As they mature they consume more plant material, including mushrooms that are toxic to humans.

Box turtles are illegal to keep as pets in many states. The over-collection of this species for the pet trade has led to a substantial decline in the population.
