Programs take place on and off Zoo grounds and are designed to involve the public in learning about animals, conservation and the environment. Volunteers will aid the Educators in presentations of animals and explanations of animal biofacts. To join, members will receive 8 hours of specific training, pass a background check and pay a one time fee to cover materials.
Safari Night Assistant
Spend the night at the Zoo! This unique experience promises to awaken the explorer in you. Volunteers assist with education programs, guided tours and animal encounters for groups of 15-30 children from ages 5 years old to adults. Safari Nights take place on Friday and Saturday nights throughout the year and require individuals to join the adventure from 5:00 p.m. to 10:30 a.m. the next day. Sleeping quarters and air mattresses are provided. A background check and short orientation are required.
Work with the animals! Learn what Keepers do on a daily basis with the Zoo's more than 1,800 animals. A Keeper's Assistant works side-by-side with a Zookeeper in all aspects of animal husbandry including routine cleanup and maintenance of environments, diet preparation and feeding, and animal enrichment. Participants are required to undergo 8 hours of training, pass a background check and pay a one time fee to cover costs of materials.
Front Gate Ambassador
Make the first impression! The Front Gate is the most important staging point to great adventure that awaits in the Zoo. Become a Zoo Ambassador by welcoming visitors or assist with organizing incoming school groups. Have a knack for retail? Become a Safari Post Assistant and provide help in the Safari Post Gift Shop.
Ring! "Hello, BREC's Baton Rouge Zoo. May I help you?" Lend a hand with general office details at the Administration and Education offices. Also for those interested in cataloging materials, explore and organize our own Zoo Library.
Trick-or-treat at the Zoo! A large number of Volunteers are needed for annual events and opportunities abound to make our Special Events popular attractions. Zippity Zoo Daze and Boo at the Zoo are just the beginning of the fun. Bring your excitement to the Zoo's activities that include face painting, education stations, food courts and arts-and-craft fun.
